Key takeaways
- A LinkedIn marketing agency runs some combination of three things: content that builds an audience, outreach that starts conversations with it, and strategy that decides who you are reaching and why.
- It is not a social media agency with a LinkedIn line item. Reach is decided in the first half hour by a small slice of your network, personal profiles out-reach company pages, and the platform is built for one-to-one conversation.
- It is not a lead generation agency either. Lead gen is measured on meetings booked this month, which usually means volume outbound and an unloved company page.
- Four types exist: full-channel specialists, single-service specialists, full-funnel B2B agencies where LinkedIn is one channel, and outbound shops. None is wrong; they suit different companies.
- You probably need one when you have the story and not the consistency. Most companies can write one good post and cannot write forty.
A LinkedIn marketing agency runs some combination of three things: the content that builds an audience, the outreach that starts conversations with that audience, and the strategy that decides who you are talking to and what the channel is being judged on.
That is the whole definition. What follows is why the category exists separately from social media and lead generation agencies, the four types you will meet, and how to tell whether you need one.
Why LinkedIn has its own agencies at all
Because the platform behaves nothing like the others, and the instincts that work elsewhere actively fail here.
Reach is decided early, by a few people. LinkedIn tests a post on a small slice of your network and expands distribution based on how that slice responds. Who sees it in the first half hour matters more than how many followers you have.
People out-reach logos. The same post from a named person with a face will travel further than from a company page, because engagement flows through human networks. On Instagram the brand account is the asset. Here it usually is not.
It is built for conversation. You can send a connection request to a CMO at a company you have never worked with and, if they accept, message them. No other major platform works that way, which is why outreach belongs inside the same strategy as the content rather than in a separate silo.
A team running Instagram, TikTok and LinkedIn together will apply the same playbook to all three. Two of those will be fine.
What it is not
Not a social media agency
Covered above. The difference is not snobbery, it is that the tactics genuinely do not transfer.
Not a lead generation agency
There is real overlap, but the measurement differs and measurement drives behaviour. A lead gen agency is judged on meetings booked this month. That pushes toward high-volume outbound and away from caring what a prospect finds when they check you out before replying.
Which is a problem, because that is precisely what decides whether they reply.
Not a personal branding service
Some agencies in this category only do founder profiles. That is a legitimate service and it is a smaller one than running a company's LinkedIn presence, which involves the company page, multiple executives, and usually outreach as well.
The four types you will meet
| Type | What they do | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| Full-channel specialist | Content, outreach and strategy, LinkedIn only | Companies whose buyers are on LinkedIn and want it run properly |
| Single-service specialist | One part only: ads, or content, or outreach | Companies with one specific problem and the rest handled |
| Full-funnel B2B agency | LinkedIn as one of five or six channels | Companies needing search, website and social together |
| Outbound shop | LinkedIn messages alongside cold email and calling | Companies needing conversation volume across channels |
We have compared specific agencies across all four types in our shortlist, including which publish pricing and which publish named client results.
Do you actually need one?
Three questions settle it.
Are your buyers on the platform? For most B2B this is yes. If you sell commodity goods on price through distributors, probably not, and no agency will change that.
Is the sale considered? LinkedIn works on long cycles where trust accumulates before anyone enquires. On impulse purchases it has nothing to do.
Do you have the consistency? This is the one that decides it. Most companies can write one good post. Very few can write forty, to a plan, while running the business. What an agency is usually selling is not writing ability, it is the plan and the fact that it still happens in month seven.
If you have never posted anything and have no idea what you would say, an agency can help you work that out, but it will cost more and take longer than if you arrive with a point of view. The agencies that do this well will interview your people to find it. The ones that do not will write from a brief, and it reads like it was.
What to ask before you hire one
- Show me a named client in my sector, with numbers. Not "a leading manufacturer" but the company name and the result.
- Is LinkedIn your whole business or one of several channels? Both answers are fine. They mean different things for how much attention you get.
- How much of my team's time do you need? If none, ask how they will learn anything only your people know.
- What are you wrong for? An agency that suits everyone has not thought about it.
When you are ready to compare specific agencies, start with the shortlist, or go straight to content, outreach or UK-based if you already know what you need. Our pricing guide covers what the category actually charges.
Frequently asked questions
- What does a LinkedIn marketing agency do?
- It runs some combination of content, outreach and strategy on LinkedIn. Content builds the audience and credibility, outreach starts conversations with that audience, and strategy decides who you are targeting and what the channel is judged on.
- What is the difference between a LinkedIn agency and a social media agency?
- Platform behaviour. LinkedIn decides reach in the first half hour through a small slice of your network, rewards posts from people over company pages, and is built for direct messaging. A team running Instagram and TikTok alongside is applying instincts that do not transfer.
- What is the difference between a LinkedIn agency and a lead generation agency?
- Lead gen is measured on meetings booked this month, which tends to mean high-volume outbound and little attention to your profile. A LinkedIn agency should care about both, because what a prospect finds when they check you out decides whether they reply.
- Do I need a LinkedIn agency or can I do it in house?
- In house works when you have someone who can write, the time to publish consistently, and a plan they are following. Most companies have one or two of the three. The agency is usually buying you the plan and the consistency rather than the writing alone.
- How do I know if my company is a good fit for LinkedIn?
- Three tests: are your buyers on the platform, is your sale considered rather than impulse, and do you have anything specific to say. If you sell commodity goods on price through distributors, LinkedIn is the wrong channel.
- What should a LinkedIn agency measure?
- Profile visits from people matching your buyer, connection requests from the right job titles, replies that start conversations, and inbound enquiries referencing something you published. Impressions and followers diagnose reach but should not be the target.
- How long before a LinkedIn agency produces results?
- Reach and conversations move within weeks. Commercial outcomes follow your sales cycle, which is why targets should be agreed before the work starts rather than argued about at the end of a quarter.
